Our week of swim lessons is over. Pax ended with the ability to put his face ever-so-briefly into the water, blow some excellent bubbles, and do an assisted back float. The whole head dunk is yet to be seen :) His teacher did a wonderful job and Pax had a blast!

And, as promised, for his bravery: a prize! His first set of little legos and a small set of duplos for Remy who was rewarded for his patience watching his brother all week...Hooray us!

Pax had his first ever soccer lesson with his buddy the other day from a neighborhood boy who is teaching a casual weekly class for kids in the park. Perfect!

We got a free week of swim lessons at our neighborhood pool thanks to the great city of Portland and a blog I happened upon. Pax and his buddy Philip are taking the class together with 2 other girls who were conveniently absent today so they had teacher Grant all to themselves. He does really great with them, and fingers crossed, Pax will put his whole face in the water by Friday! He is loving it and looks forward to it so far both mornings. Another side note, we got some awesome Star Wars swim trunks at Target and Philip showed up in the same pair... they were thrilled.

So great watching all these little people play together. 5 kiddos under the age of 5! In less than 48 hours we had 2 sleepovers, a pancake breakfast, OMSI, shopping for the mamas and babies, lunch, naps, frozen yogurt, forts, races, play-dough, dinner, baths, waffle window, more play-dough, and lots of giggles and tickles! Such fun memories!

Paxton's gift from us: a child's guitar. He loves it. We also started a new tradition this year and the 3 of us watched The Polar Express together tonight after Remy went to bed. It was perfect Christmas fun... cookies and all!

Pax has been taking really good care of giraffe lately. He has been giving her extra snuggles and checking to make sure I have been playing with her while he's at school. Most recently, we put up a good attitude chart for giraffe as well (she gets stickers too) and today Paxton has a birthday celebration for her before she had a sleepover at her friends house (in the bookshelf)! Too sweet. I love this imaginative and nurturing side of Pax.

It's been a calm and beautiful week here at home. The boys have been playing a lot together... really well!

We head out tomorrow morning but the last couple days I've been reflecting on how this week has been such a gift to me.

Now off we go...over the river and through the mountains! So excited for more family and fun.

Grandma Berg is visiting so I am catching up on the blogs... here are a few from Thanksgiving. A super chill day this year... no one from out of town, but Daniel joined us for a super yummy Thanksgiving meal. yum yum. Pax decided maybe he DID like mashed potatoes, the turkey however wasnt as big of a hit. The best part was easily the place mats that were hand-made (literally) by Pax, each with their own name printed and turkey drawn by Pax!

We moved both boys into the front room upstairs. We are very excited about it. Pax got a new big boy loft/bunk bed as part of his Christmas gift from us, and Remy just graduated from the pack and play into a real crib. Hooray for progress. In other notes, we've been up with one or both of them all but 3 nights in the last 3 weeks since we made the move. Patience, patience. I still don't regret it.

Paxton goes through rain boots like most people go through soap. He wears them everyday in the fall and spring. We got the frog boots yesterday bc they were all that was available at the store and we needed them asap!... and Pax was not happy about it. He wouldn't even try them on for several hours! This finally changed when I offered him the choice to decorate them whatever way he would like with a permanent marker. He quickly obliged and now he loves his new boots... and so do I!

He drew this for me yesterday... he rarely draws people so it's extra special to me.

I will remember this today as he threw a whopper of a tantrum at the doctor (for no good reason) today and I need to remember his sweeter side! Pax hated being there, we brought necklace (the seahorse stuffed animal) as a distraction, but when they brought out the thermometer, nothing worked. Ugh. The irony is, as soon as we got home he wanted to play doctor with his animals and take their temperatures. Ha! Turns out he just has a harmless rash... And a bad 4-yr-old temper!

I love watching the boys play together. It's still a little new so its just so sweet to behold. The giggles, the looks... I love it.

HA! Every time we wash his hair! Seriously, every time. We even cut his hair short so I wouldn't have to pour water on it to get the soap out and he still has a fit every time. But tonight was soooo funny. I actually got him laughing in the middle of crying... then he kept going back and forth and it became not only a funny game but a great teaching point about how we are the ones who control our own emotions. (If you dont have kids feel free to roll your eyes upon reading this).

These pics are kinda funny of Pax, but they are also true to him. He wont hardly ever look at the camera these days... and occasionally when I break down and bribe him to do so, I get funny smiles like these.

Anyway, this year Pax kept changing his mind about what he wanted to be... it was a chicken for a long time, then a lettuce cupcake (odd I know) then he finally settled on a bush. We upped the ante when we added a geocache which he and Ryan have recently been into. So he was a bush, holding a container of small treasures that he gave out to people who asked who he was... it was cute. He's never been one for costumes or dress up so I was impressed it lasted as long as it did.

He was thrilled with his loot and even picked 20 things to give the dentist for their candy-for-toys program. Score! Remy tuckered out early and gave up his gnome costume for a snuggle with jammies.

We also had great fun last weekend with Adam and Robyn in town. We LOOOOVE them and it was so much fun to catch up on life and spend a few moments relaxing and doing life together.

Great memories. Pax LOVED the campfire. He also loved playing chase (mostly with aunt Betty), balloon rockets, smores, the tent and the beloved Camping Pie. How did I not get a picture of that? I'll get a pic and the story together on another blog post. Anyway, it was a great trip. Not a ton of sleep involved... but fantastic none-the-less!

Almost every morning Paxton will spend 30 minutes to an hour playing with his Legos. He is seriously really an amazing architect with them. He wants things to be a certain way, a certain color with a certain symmetry or balance. It is fun to watch him when he is in his zone... we call it "quiet play time"...and we like it for us too! Pax will pull out these multiple times though out almost every day and build amazing towers, movie theaters, houses, schools, underwater villages and countless other creations his imagination designs.

The other week Pax announced that he wanted a magnifying glass. We thought about several options: waiting for Bday, allowance, chores, etc. But in the end we decided on a good attitude chart. Things like finishing your meal, good bedtime attitude, cleaning up toys etc all were rewarded at the end of the day with stickers on the chart. After about 2 weeks and a total of 50 stickers, we headed off yesterday and got a magnifying glass reward for P. It was awesome! And yes, he's wearing one of Remy's socks as a glove...crazy boy!

Pax has been talking about wanting a pet lately... mostly a friendly snake. Now, this is as likely as getting a cat... so I decided to make him a substitution. He named it "ba" and for a minute I thought it might be something special and sweet to him that might help him through this time of transition. Instead, he wanted it to hang on a tree in the backyard (just like in a book we have). He doesn't want to play with it or take it down or bring it inside...its more of a garden decoration to him... oh well, at least it served for some good pics. Ha.

kind of a really big deal

So, today was the day. We've been talking with Paxton for almost a year now about how one day he would grow up and be a big kid and sleep without his pacifier (AKA ba). I have taken several approaches to this... but most recently I had told him of a ba faerie that would come when he was a big kid and take his ba and give it to a baby who needed it and then leave him a big kid present...(I thought this was clever for an on-the-fly kind of response to him one night). This idea worked for a while, we talked often of the ba faerie but eventually Pax got nervous and no longer liked the idea of her and would beg me to keep her away. I knew I needed another plan. [Enter my sister, AKA Aunt Jess] Her excellent advice was: when ready, cut it with scissors (so there's no turning back) and then turn it into something different and fun. [Enter Disney show Special Agent OSO]. Pax has recently taken to this show and loves to talk about the satellite in it. So the other day we took a new approach. It went something like this...

Pax: Mama, I love satellites. Maybe someday I can get a toy satellite, like at Christmas time.

Me: That sounds fun... or... we could turn your ba into a special ba-satellite that hangs over your bed when you decide your a big kid and you dont need it anymore to sleep.

Pax: Yes, lets do that now. I'm ready.

... So, he had been asking us for 2 full days now to change his ba into a satellite.

We had gone over all that meant and felt like he fully understood.

So today after nap... we headed to the craft store...

Here is his new "big boy bed" or as he also calls it "my get out bed"

First, He cut the ba

Then (this is my favorite part) he called my brother in law who pretended to be Agent OSO and they talked about how brave he was. (Thanks David, you are seriously awesome.)

We got a bunch of styrofoam balls and ribbon and glitter and paint and sequins and stickers... and made a giant mess. serious good fun.

When it was all done, the ba-satellite was hung with all the new planets over his bed. Pax was thrilled and then sad and even shed a few tears at bed time but overall did really well. No huge tantrum (yet). We got him a new light as part of the prize for being a big kid and being so brave. We are really proud of him. Tonight was so sweet (I stayed with him till he fell asleep) he would tell me, "I think I need to cry for a minute" and then he would cry and pull it back together. We would talk for a while and then it would come again, "mama, I feel the crying coming back again". He is such a tender little guy. I just love him so much. It took him a little over an hour but he eventually fell asleep. We will see about nap time tomorrow and there's alway the potential of waking up in the middle of the night and the panic of no ba. But, he grew up a little today... or a lot. I am one proud mama.

Pax doesn't love it when I take pictures of him. He usually runs away from the camera... but tonight I was able to snap just a few with the ole' "whatever you do, just don't smile" trick. My sister reminded me of that one!

Anyway, we've all been fighting colds (note snot in above pic) and life is pretty normal here. Pax is soooooo 3. Lots of tantrums, especially when you add the cough and runny nose into the equation. He has such a strong personality but I love that about him. He is so heartfelt. He is full of life and energy. Constant. Constantly talking and laughing and yelling and singing, bouncing and running. And he loves with his whole heart ...he is such a sweet love.

So fun. This last Saturday we went for 4 mile hike. Pax was a rock star and hiked all the way uphill to the punchbowl waterfall. Ryan carried him a good part of the way back since we timed it a bit too close to naptime and someone was tired... great time though and beautiful day!

OK, these are out of order and I'm not doing the amazing photos my sister took any justice by just slapping them all on the blog... but truth be told, I am overwhelmed. Pax was totally 3 the whole time we got to spend together. I know, I know he IS 3. But all the same, sometimes he is MORE 3 than others... and this was definitely that. Even still, they were troopers and put up with the sass and went with the flow... such a wonderful aunt and uncle. It was great to see them and enjoy time together. baby Noah even got his own special hug and kiss before they left this morning. Next time we are all together there will be one more!!!

We had a fun week this last week coming up with some new activities to fill our days since there was no preschool (due to teacher-parent conferences). So we decided to try a tumbling class at our local park. Pax had a great time rolling/hopping/somersaulting/and dancing. It was great fun. Thanks to his good friend Sadie for the idea! PS he does a killer downward dog!

And if coarse we spent a lot of time at our little park right by our house!

Secret Number Job

We got to go to Paxton's preschool's open house the other night. It was so much fun to let him show us around and get a further glimpse into his world there. We LOVE his preschool...although I think he loves it most! What a gift! Anyway, this is his favorite "job" (if your not familiar with Montessori lingo then you can look it up). This is the secret number job. Paxton tells us every day about this job, which is a big deal since he claims most days to not remember anything. So, this job consists of a certain number of objects in this small box (on this occasion it was little pigs). They open the box, count the objects using the number strip of paper, then they write down the number on their own small sheet of paper and sign their name to it and put it in the basket. I think at the end of the day they open all the papers in the basket and see who all got the number correct. So, there it is. The secret number job. Chronicled here. for you to read about. And for Paxton to remember someday later.

Yesterday Pax was playing with the fish from his tub toys and baking some wonderful creations. He made Ryan and I fish with, "a little bit of lemon, a little bit of salt and pepper, a little bit of avocado, and a little bit of tomatoes and celery and something else... and a little bit of pumpkin seeds". Brilliant. Seriously, it sounds kind of good right? Then we went right back into little boy land and he added dog poop and chocoate pudding... not so yummy anymore. I love how he loves to cook with me and Ryan in the kitchen and by himself in his room in his kitchen. I wonder if he will one day be a creative chef!

Pax and I have this thing we do from time to time. Every so often when Pax is doing his "boy-thing" (this could be anything from spitting on me or trying to lick my shoe or playing too rough with me, or countless other things) I simply remind him that mama likes 3 things. I like hugs and kisses and tickles. The tickles are the fun part for him and we tickle for a long time while I sneak in my hugs and kisses but every so often he really wants the hugs the most. This melts me. I love this little boy and I love this little game of ours.
